My Grandfather, Gordon Stace Smith, was in love with with my Grandmother, Anne Elizabeth Martin, who lived in Scotland. In 1911 they weren't yet married and he missed her deeply. While sitting on the beach at Deep Cove, BC (North Vancouver) he carved a simple love poem into a heart-shaped sandstone rock and left it on the beach. In 1966 that sandstone rock with the carved poem was found by a resident of Deep Cove who was gathering rocks from the beach. Here are photos and the words to the poem:
Farewell thou billowy spray
I'm loathe to part with thee
But my heart is far away
Where Lizzie waits for me
